Antique Late Victorian Intaglio ring of hard stone (Sardinian Onyx) rub set into 18ct yellow gold with a coiled wire border. Total weight 3.9gms. Intaglio depicts the Roman God Janus. 

In ancient Roman mythology Janus is the god of beginnings & transitions,  thence also of gates, doorways, endings and time. He is usually a two-faced god since he looks to the future and the past. The Romans dedicated the month of January to Janus.
